Has Brexit really happened?
Jan 18th 2021
Hello my friends 🖐,
and welcome back to the Monday #TechWatchbySeb ☕️
And this week, we will talk a lot about Uk-based Tech companies. It was a very dense week of press releases, to the point where I asked myself whether Brexit had actually happened.
I wonder what the future holds for this innovation hub.
It is early to do projections but funnily enough, I’m part of a Whatsapp group and not later than this week-end there was a debate between people arguing why they think London will remain a strategic hub for innovation. Maybe not the European central point, but most probably will remain an important global hub.
We don’t know yet how it’s going to evolve, but I think the following news will provide some clues. 🧐
🥇 The British payments startup Checkout.com (🇬🇧) has just raised a private round of 450M$ valuing the company at 15bn. This deal pushed the company as the largest European Startup and also the 11th largest privately backed startup in the world 👏 (link)
🥈 The incredible story of this #spacetech company Oneweb (🇬🇧), which within a few months went from filing bankruptcy, being rescued by the Uk Gov. to today announcing a fundraising of 1,4Bn 💪. The company is creating a constellation of 600 satellites to improve communication. (Link) An incredible journey, but probably the price to pay to become a worldwide leader.
Even though I really wanted to delve into Deliveroo’s (🇬🇧) announcement of a new fundraising of $180M, ahead of an IPO targeting a market valuation of 8Bn, I will dedicate my 3rd news on a to a non-UK, but here is the (Link).
🥉 In the same vein of Oneweb’s news, we are seeing European governments adopt an increasingly proactive approach towards supporting and working with local innovators.
➜ The German government is preparing an amendment of the competition law to better manage the market dominance in the digital space (Link)
➜ The French government is partnering with the startup Doctolib (🇫🇷) to the deployment of COVID-19 vaccines (Link).
That’s it for this week, wishing you a great week 🖐
Stay safe ❤️
